The German company Metabo was founded in 1924 by Albrecht Schnizler at his parents' bakery in Nürtingen. The founder chose the name Metabo based on the German name of his first hand-held metal drill "Metallbohrdreher".

Metabo tools are used by professionals in various parts of the world. Therefore, the company’s motto “When you need it most” seems to reflect the company’s prevalence on different construction sites. Although the company is considered to be medium in size, it currently employs around 1,800 people, most of them in Germany. About 80 percent of the company's sales are exports to foreign countries.
